The moment we've been dreading has now come to pass. The end of an era, in more ways than one. Thank you, everyone, for everything. When Phelps and I started this project, we had no expectations. Just an exciting idea that we spent months talking about, working through, absolutely gushing over as it took shape and substance. What came to become The Windowpuncher started, if you can believe it, as a funny meme that a friend made for Phelps' GTA-based Illusion series. A small little funny that got us both to ask the same question at the same time; what if we had a hero that was just busting up windows? Why the hell would he be doing that? And what sort of place would that be happening in?
As we answered the questions, more arose. As we answered those, even more arose, branching off into every direction like, well, a multiverse. A whole new setting came to being, fleshing itself out through the study of existing systems and ads, rolled into personal traumas and targeted advertising alike. It was an organic thing, and its conception belongs just as much to the hectic and omnipresent modern neo-capitalism of our 'Nu-Earth' as it does to our collective creative minds.
Often it felt more like we were recording the annals of a real person's trials in a real place, one beset by wonder and horror, all brought about by the unconscious needful mind. Yeah, we always knew that BuyMort wasn't sentient, that we were the ones pushing it on ourselves because of the wondrous things it had to offer. BuyMort never understood what it was doing, which makes it that much horrific, and is one of the scary things about the world today. When my son entered first grade and had his stroke, slipping into a coma that would go on to require three brain surgeries and much of his 1st grade life living at the hospital, Facebook and Google algorithms unflinchingly offered me health insurance, hospital stays, and cemetary plots, unworried about the emotional consequences. And that was always part of it, the tragedy of the sales ads. Those ads still haunt me sometimes, though he recovered and has been awake, unblinded, stroke-free, and unparalyzed for the last 6+ years.
Working with Phelps on this, writing those horrifically cheerful ads, really helped me with the dreams and those dark echoes of the past. As did all of your comments and support.
If you are here at our substack, I’ll be trying to provide more and more articles and funnies as time allows. We also have our Patreon if you want to keep up. We'll continue to work on other series as much as we can, and hopefully provide the same level of action-packing, thought-provoking, giggle-stoked, sometimes horrific entertainment in the next million and a half words as we have in these first. There are a lot of concepts and ideas spiraling about, and hopefully we can all continue to share in them together.
Again, thank you so much! We couldn't have done this without you!
